pre-memory-errorHave you ever tried downloading an app from the App Catalog and got the not enough memory error notice? One would think with 8GB of storage space you can fit more than 20 or 30 apps on your handset. With more than 200 apps currently available how is one suppose to pick and choose?

Well the problem is indeed a complicated and unmanageable one as of right now. Your Pre has 3 partitions, a / (root), /media and a /var partition. The / (root) partition is where webOS and all of Palm’s apps are stored, the /media is for media as it implies and the /var is where your applications are stored.

For some reason Palm gave the /var partition an allocation of just 253MB which explains why you cannot have too many applications installed on your handset. Now there are a few solutions as outlined on PreCentral but not a single one is for the faint of heart and 99% of the population is better off not even looking at this time. There is a virtual patrician work around that webOS Internals is currently working on but as you can imagine we won’t be seeing it for a while. If your one of those tech savy people with no fear of a complete restore of your Pre head over to PreCentral for details on how to manage more space on your Pre.
