Recently an Environmental Working Group has taken a list of mobile phones and the amount of radiation given off by these smartphones and compared them to see just which are doing more damage than the others. The list is composed of the more popular smartphone handsets in the US right now.

sar-chart

The Palm Pre is clear down at the bottom (being good) only being beat out by the BlackBerry Storm. After taking a look at this table I can’t help but ask myself what happened with the inconsistencies in BlackBerry handsets?

Ok now for the breakdown of just how these ratings work. The SAR measures how much electromagnetic energy is put off by these handsets when in use. In the US the SAR ratings for phones is limited to just 1.6 W/kg, the MyTough 3G is just .05 away from that limit making it very close to being cut off. In Europe the limit is set higher at 2.0 W/kg meaning they give off more electromagnetic energy thus making them more harmful in the long run.
