VOXOFON: WebOS VOIP App Coming Later This Year!
| by PalmWebOS.org on July 29th, 2009 |
What a treat! Two new apps were announced and appeared in the App Catalog today and now we’re getting great news about an upcoming application that will appear later this year: VOXOFON!
Sign up for a free VOXOFON account and you’ll get .50 cents of credit. Then you can dial an international number and before pressing the “call” button it will tell you the rate – it starts at 1.3 cents/minute but check to make sure the price is affordable enough for your needs.
If you have unlimited data/calling then you won’t incur any additional charges, but you should know that you WILL use minutes as if it was a local call (access number) and utilize 1kb-2kb of data to set the call up in the first place. Once you’ve got everything set up the actual calling process is super-simple:
- Click on Voxofon app
- Enter the destination phone number…
- Or select it from the phone Contacts
- Voxofon will display the destination name and the intl. calling rate.
- Click ‘Call’ to make a call via a local access number
- Click ‘More’ to send SMS or setup a callback
If you’re making international calls, this could save you a pretty penny and be ultra convenient at the same time. And if you’re traveling internationally, you could buy a SIM card in your destination country and use Voxofon there!
This was announced on the Voxofon blog and I’ve posted the press release below:
Voxofon First With Mobile VoIP for Palm® Pre™
Application is Company’s Fourth for Smart PhonesVOXOFON has expanded the availability of its low-cost international calling services by introducing a mobile voice over Internet (VoIP) application for the Palm(R) WebOS(TM) platform. The application is designed for use on the new Palm(R) Pre(TM) smart phone.
VOXOFON plans to make the new application available on the Palm App Catalog later this year. After installation the callers can simply click on the VOXOFON icon on the phone screen to place a low-cost international call. The application works anywhere the phone has coverage and does not require a Wi-Fi connection. In addition, there are no monthly fees or contracts.
VOXOFON’s website, www.voxofon.com, has a special section on the new application, including a short video showing how to use the service.
Alexey Goloshubin, CEO of VOXOFON, says that as smart phones have become increasingly popular, the demand for such applications has increased. He notes that VOXOFON has pioneered similar applications for iPhone(TM), Android(TM) and BlackBerry(R) smartphones. Reviewers have praised VOXOFON’s mobile service as “incredibly simple to use” and “must-have” applications.
“VoIP technology offers great savings for international calling, but until recently it hasn’t been readily available on mobile phones, whose users have traditionally paid a premium for long-distance service,” Goloshubin said. “We are very pleased to be able to add Palm Pre users to our smart phone customer base.”
Beginning at 1.3 cents per minute, with no additional fees, VOXOFON international calling services allow customers to call using their smart phone, computer, land line, or a cell phone.
VOXOFON has been a leader in providing convenient mobile applications for its VoIP service, beginning with a web application for iPhone that was introduced in the summer of last year. In September 2008, VOXOFON was the first to announce an application for the Android platform – one that offered transparent cost optimization for international calls. The company followed with an identical application for BlackBerry smartphones in January of this year.
All VOXOFON services are available under a single account, providing customers with the flexibility to use the service they find most convenient.
VOXOFON LLC is based in Houston, Texas. For more information or a free test call, go to www.voxofon.com.

This is hardly a true VOIP application. It may use VOIP on the backend to call the destination party, but it uses voice time on the source call. Extremely miss leading.
