Palm was pretty sneaky about creating a way for WebOS devices – aka only the Palm Pre right now – to sync seamlessly with iTunes. They essentially built a system that tricked iTunes into thinking it was an iPod/iPhone… didn’t make Apple too happy and now they’ve struck back.
iTunes 8.2.1 will BREAK the Palm Pre sync features and you should NOT upgrade to iTunes right now.
The new version of iTunes doesn’t add much and you might as well wait for Palm to strike back before you update… at least that would be my suggestion. Palm has already acknowledged the warring sleight of hands in an official statement:
Palm’s media sync works with iTunes 8.2. If Apple chooses to disable media sync in iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we can consider.
Busted. It is basically true… Apple is screwing many of its own loyal users to protect their iPod/iPhone empire. But if I purchase a song on iTunes shouldn’t I be able to do whatever the heck I want with it without having to jump through a bunch of stupid hoops?
Give me a break Apple. Grow up or die.
