Palm Pre – The Broken Volume Button Saga
| by PalmWebOS.org on June 11th, 2009 |
I didn’t “wake up early” and wait in line for my Palm Pre. Why not? Knowing me I would sleep through the alarm or smack it into silence, so instead I pulled an all-nighter. At about 6:45AM I headed to the Sprint retail store in the Inner Harbor and waited with about 7 other people who arrived earlier than myself – one young lady showed up at 3am (and the phone was for her boyfriend!).
Anyways, I rushed home from Baltimore to Columbia with my new Pre, hoping to film a ridiculous amount of videos for all aspiring Pre owners to check out. But having been awake for 30+ hours straight, I plugged my Pre in and took a quick nap… that lasted 12 hours. When I woke up I immediately picked up my Pre and what happened? My finger swiped the volume up/down key and it fell right out.
This is the aftermath and solution:
Some points I’d like to emphasize about this whole process:
- The Columbia Sprint stores are wack for not answering the phone
- The Baltimore Sprint store didn’t really have to tell me to “come in”, driving 30 minutes just to put me on a list
- The above 2 are excusable seeing as how the Sprint stores were probably dealing with an overflow of traffic
- In the end I got a replacement Palm Pre rather painlessly
- My Palm Profile flawlessly synced the data that had been on my original Pre, ensuring a smooth transition
Was the Palm Pre Volume Button breaking a feak occurence or are there others out there experiencing this? Who knows, but it seems that whatever problem you might have, Sprint is trying their best to accomodate its customers which I certainly commend.
Did your Palm Pre break? Was it your fault? What was your experience getting it fixed/replaced?

My volume piece fell off after a week and a half and I miss place the tiny little piece and there telling me it is wear and tear…I think that’s bullshit seeing I paid $600 dollars for a phone that was just recently released. I have a pixel problem and for whatever bullshit reason that does not over ride the fact that the key fell off and still claims it to be wear and tear..I’m very upset.

mine just fell out and i popped it right back in easily, if you took your time to look at it you would see that you need to squeeze the phone down to prevent the piece from going between the two sliding pieces of the phone instead of inside where the button belongs. took me about 10 seconds to put it back in.

mine didn’t fall off, but the lower part (volume down) only works in cold areas, like outside in winter.

The volume started “self adjusting” when I opened the slide on my pre and I could only turn my volume down. I took the volume button off to see what was going on inside. Under the plastic button are two round metal “bubble buttons” that allow you to press down on them and make a connection on the volume circuit board to either turn the sound up or down. When you release the button they pop back into their bubble shap and the connection stops. The small metal circles are glued to little plastic squares that hold them down. What had happened on mine was one of thos plastic squares came off and took the little circle button with it. This is why only my “volume down” button worked. As far as the volume self adjusting randomly, I don’t know if the the missing button is causing that or if it is a separate problem.

well mine fell off too- when I wasn’t looking- so yeah I would pop the little button back on if I knew where it was, EDWARD.
